International Women’s Day at Acro

International Women's Day blog

This International Women’s Day, we want to spotlight the experience of the women working here at Acro.

Whether it’s supporting across departments at Acro, or ensuring that invoices are paid and cleared, Chantel George (Executive Assistant) and Alexandra Balan (Data Entry Clerk), share what motivates them in their role, what they love about working here at Acro, as well as the biggest challenges they feel women face in the aviation industry.

What do you like most about working at Acro?

CG: The supportive and friendly atmosphere and working for a company that has nurtured me and helped me develop my role further and given me opportunities to attend events like AIX in Hamburg.

AB: I believe the most valuable thing that we have at Acro is the friendly environment. I have never worked in a place before with so many nice and supportive colleagues. At challenging times, we can always count on one another.

Why did you choose this as a career?

CG: I chose to become an Executive Assistant (EA) because it offers the opportunity to be involved in key projects and collaborate across all areas of the business. I truly enjoy the dynamic interaction between the EA role and different departments, as it allows me to contribute to a wide range of initiatives and support the organisation in meaningful ways.

AB: I think finance chose me. Before joining Acro, I hadn’t decided quite which direction I wanted my career to go in. Acro allowed me to put my skills into practice and expand my knowledge and helped me realise that finance is the best choice I can make for myself, and I should pursue a career in this.

What is most interesting about your role?

CG: I love the collaborative nature of working as an Executive Assistant, as well as the opportunity to work closely with colleagues across the business. It’s a really varied job where no two days are the same, and that’s what I love about it.

AB: As a sociable person, I really enjoy speaking with people, and communication is an essential part of finance. Whether it’s getting the invoices cleared and cash flow running or putting data into the system, I often need additional information. I believe getting in touch with everyone and finding the story behind every purchase is the most interesting part.

What challenges do you think women have working in Aviation?

CG: Aviation remains a predominantly male-dominated industry, and there is a need for greater female diversity to foster a more inclusive environment. I really enjoy being part of this industry as there are so many varied roles available within it, many of which are still dominated by men, so it’s great to see more women coming into the sector and breaking that mould.

AB: Being in a male-dominated field, I would say that women in aviation may think there is a lack of support for women in the industry. I would love to see more discussions about the things that women can bring to the industry and help women to learn to put themselves first. We have a wonderful sense of community here at Acro, and the more women who join the industry, the better!

What’s the best piece of career advice you have been given?

CG: Develop thick skin, don’t dwell on the small things, and always stay one step ahead.

AB: To never settle in an environment that does not make you happy. It’s important to give yourself the best chance, so do not waste time somewhere where your efforts are not appreciated. Remember, what you do not change, you choose.
